Art Psychotherapy

I have trained in psycho-dynamic art psychotherapy, having previously worked using my visual arts training across a wide age range, in a variety of therapeutic settings.

Art Psychotherapy is a form of psychotherapy and involves the use of a variety of art media through which people can express their thoughts and feelings. Art psychotherapy can help those with a wide range of emotional and relationship difficulties.  It can also be helpful to those suffering from depression, loss, bereavement, loneliness, anxiety, sexual difficulties, eating problems, personality difficulties or difficulties in communication.

It can help people to discover what lies beneath their difficulties and to use this understanding to find better ways of dealing with them. Longstanding problems often have their origins in early life.  Exploring the connections between past experiences and current difficulties helps pinpoint how and why unhelpful patterns of behaviour are repeated.  The therapist offers an independent opportunity to reflect on your life in a non-judgemental way that perhaps you never have before.

No artistic ability is required as the aim is primarily communication of feeling, not the creation of works of art.  It is of particular value both to those who experience difficulty with words or those who use too many words to disguise true feelings.

"Art therapy has given me permission and enabled me to look at and express my real feelings.  It has given me a deeper sense of wellbeing. Inwardly things have changed and it's had good effects on my relationships all round"

"This image is really important to me. It’s to do with how I see myself. Now I feel it’s OK to acknowledge it. I feel so much stronger in myself”
